As a user migrating from Planswift, these are the feature requests I have regarding color options, page tools, and user interface/visual aspects

I've been using zzTakeoff for a few weeks and I really enjoy it. But these are a few things that stood out to me that I would request:

Color Options:

  • Ability to choose the highlighter color before marking
  • Option to select multiple highlights and change their color at once
  • Keep the last used highlight color active for quick re-use
  • More color options for measurements (possibly a colorwheel)
  • Turn off dark outline on measured areas, it looks like a linear takeoff:

Page Tools:

  • Open multiple pages in the same window
  • Duplicate an existing page
  • Rearrange measurement order within the pages panel
  • Rename overlay layers
  • Allow interactive annotations: Screenshot/crop parts of pages and move, resize, and adjust them freely. For example, have a cropped image of the scope that you can move around the page.

Visual/Interface:

  • Prevent clicking a measurement in the “pages” panel from zooming the page all the way out
  • Dimension arrows should scale properly so small measurements aren’t blocked:

  • Allow text size adjustments in the takeoffs panel, or have it scale automatically when the panel is resized. If a measurement or page name is long, it gets cut off:

Yes! Great Requests!

Chaz Prichard 7d 13h

Yes @Nicole there's some great stuff here!

I've contributed what I can or have learned so far, or echo'd your sentiments completely, or just been inspired to think in some new and fresh ways...

Hope to see more contributions from you in the future!

Color Options:

  • Ability to choose the highlighter color before marking
  • You're not alone on this one! So, thanks for keeping the voice strong on this one!
  • https://www.zztakeoff.com/app/community/feature-requests/highlight-color-change
  • I haven't commented or suggested before, but it's been in my mind - this has been frustrating for sure (especially during plan review time). I think I've just resorted to copy/paste of the H/L to keep track of color/shape which isn't ideal but a simple workaround for now
  • Option to select multiple highlights and change their color at once
  • Also, agreed. One of my first QTO's on zz I remember highlighting 30-40 notes on a sheet and realized later I couldn't change the colors to signify/flag to myself different bid packages or something...
  • Which brings up another suggestion to create stamps or ability for users to create annotations/highlights with a premade shape.
  • I'd even recommend for the first iteration just the ability to create a square or rectangle would be awesome to be able to quickly just dot the page quickly w/o being counted as a QTO (I've used count items in the past for this feature but annotate/highlight would be the correct way)
  • Keep the last used highlight color active for quick re-use
  • I know for sure this would be a less frustrating experience as well and even if your first suggestion is touched on first that would almost eliminate this suggestion
  • I would like to take your first suggestion and this suggestion further and say allow the user to pick color when selecting highlight tool and also show last 3-6 colors selected or any highlight colors that are picked up on the current page as options as well???
  • I keep pushing for the ability to know the HEX# so I can match QTO with H/L colors - https://www.zztakeoff.com/app/community/feature-requests/color-swatch-identifier-hex
  • More color options for measurements (possibly a colorwheel)
  • I'm assuming "dimensions" tool for this suggestion which currently has the ability to change colors via properties or is this another suggestion?
  • Turn off dark outline on measured areas, it looks like a linear takeoff:
  • Interesting. I would think this could be an easy checkbox item
  • I know I'm usually typing in the width of my linear QTO items, especially with concrete like the curb maybe at 6-12", so I can differentiate but I do get it. I know there's a passionate group on zz that has pushed for linear width hard

Page Tools:

  • Open multiple pages in the same window
  • I'm curious and trying to follow, are you looking for horizontal/vertical splitscreen or tabs in the same "takeoff" window?
  • I know there's a large crowd of users that have got accustomed to just to using the "Overlay" -> "Transparent" tool to bring in whole page(s) onto the page they're working. I think this is a highly helpful strategy!
  • I know in my past I may make up a detail helper sheet in a pdf editing software of the details I'd like to reference throughout a QTO and could help in the "Overlay" strategy above
  • I'm hoping that zz's "Bookmarks" tool will soon turn into a place where we can drag a bookmark(s) onto a sheet, but for now this tool is pretty handy
  • Duplicate an existing page
  • Great suggestion and I believe this is very near in the future if not already possible and I have some more zz to learn!
  • If it was a must thing right now you could always just keep bringing the same page in again and again
  • Sometimes "Layers" may just do the trick as well???
  • Rearrange measurement order within the pages panel
  • This is the one I had a hard time understanding. Could you elaborate?
  • Rename overlay layers
  • I had this same issue. There's a little 3-dot menu that's very faded to the right of each layer
  • Allow interactive annotations: Screenshot/crop parts of pages and move, resize, and adjust them freely. For example, have a cropped image of the scope that you can move around the page.
  • This one is a little less intuitive but still awesome, but the only way I've discovered is the "Overlay" tool (as mentioned above)
  • Here's the best way I've found so far: (quick YT video)
  • "Click-To-Drag" and "Crop as New Page" (in this example a detail)
  • When I'm being thorough or if it matters I'll rename the sheet and sheet name (also using the "Click-To-Drag")
  • Go to the page where you want the cropped image (detail)
  • Click the "Overlay" button and choose "Type" and "Create Overlay"
  • Then just drag and drop where you want it (ignore the alignment/match point tooltip/suggestion)
  • Then click "Done" or just hit the escape key
  • Create as many crops on a page as you want and use the realign tool to better position or move

Visual/Interface:

  • Prevent clicking a measurement in the “pages” panel from zooming the page all the way out
  • I'm not sure I understand this request. Is this when clicking from one page to the next having the option to stay at last known zoom level vs zoom extents or "Zoom to Fit"?
  • Dimension arrows should scale properly so small measurements aren’t blocked:
  • 100% AGREE! Hoping the development team will snag this one soon
  • Allow text size adjustments in the takeoffs panel, or have it scale automatically when the panel is resized. If a measurement or page name is long, it gets cut off:
  • WOW!!! I never knew there was a limit to how much the "Takeoffs" side window could be dragged out until now. Interesting...
  • I'm not sure how important font/text size would matter to me on the sheets/QTO's/annotations, but I see there could be an issue

Thanks for all the thoughtful and detailed feedback. We will keep improving based on feedback posted here in our community. 🙂

I'm also really hoping to get some more color options, as a creature of habit, there are just some colors in Planswift that I always use for certain takeoffs, Hydroseed and Sod look great in specific colors of green, and all that Desert Gold Decomposed Granite just looks so nice on the plans if I make it a nice warm golden color, I can also like how easily I can match Highlighter or Note colors to the color of the takeoff I'm referencing if I want to on Planswift

my most loved and will be missed part of Planswift is probably the color options, a custom color menu and even the way I can see the numbers for Hue, Sat, Lum, etc, is cool

Very Small Potatoes in the grand scheme of all the awesome features that ZZ has, but a potato that would love to see here at some point

@Kristi Thanks for the input. The next update has a lot more color options like this (5X+ as many colors). We could easily expand further, though. This part of the app is pretty easy for us to expand compared to the underlying formula engine, inheritance, etc.

So awesome! And working on a Saturday too!!! zz just doesn't stop...

@Chaz:

-I agree, I would like a shape or count feature to quickly mark the plans without counting towards quantity.

-The way I use the highlighter is to highlight the numbers on the scope notes and also where those numbers appear on the plan page. Then I make my takeoff colors match. I also highlight any details related to that item in the same color. So a color picker tool would be very helpful.

-By more color options for "measurements" I meant my takeoffs. So again just addressing the color selection.

I liked the gradient color picker Planswift has:

-For my “dark outline” question, I just mean that all square footage takeoff areas have a dark outline that looks the same as a linear takeoff. So I get confused and think there is a curb measurement, when it’s just the outline of another area.

-For the “multiple pages in the same window” suggestion, I was thinking something like this that’s in Planswift:

The overlay feature is sort of what I’m looking for, but the image isn’t easily moveable and resizable for that use. I would want a resize method where you can drag the corner to resize proportionally. And to click and drag the image to move it.

-I noticed my “Rearrange measurement order within the pages panel” suggestion might not be necessary because if you drag and reorder your measurements in the takeoffs tab, they also reorder themselves on the pages tab.

-For renaming overlay layers, your explanation is for how to rename “layers”. I want to rename overlays. These are the only options when I right click on an overlay.

-Regarding the page zoom issue: When I am zoomed in on a page and click the name of an area I have measured in the "Pages" panel, the view immediately zooms all the way out to show the entire page
