As a general contractor, we organize our project takeoffs by Division and Trade custom properties. Our templates already follow that structure—for example, Division 07 → Metal Panels → Area, Count, Linear, and Wall takeoffs.
After completing a project takeoff, we need to create separate marked-up plan sets for concrete, roofing, metal panels, and other scopes to share with subcontractors through BuildingConnected. Preparing those sets should be much faster.
1. Link templates to scope layers
Let us assign a layer to a takeoff template, or map its Division/Trade properties to a layer. When I create a new takeoff item from the Templates tab, the item and the takeoff drawn with it should automatically use that layer. For example, an Area template for Division 07 / Metal Panels would use the Division 07 – Metal Panels layer without requiring me to remember to switch layers manually.
Even this first step would be valuable: after completing takeoff, I could enable only the Concrete layer and quickly prepare a concrete-only export.
2. Export only pages containing takeoff on the selected layer or scope
Add an option such as “Export all pages with takeoff data on this layer.” Turning on a layer does not solve the separate problem of finding every page with that scope’s takeoff. The export should automatically select those pages, show only the selected scope’s takeoffs, and include a legend for the included takeoff items. Pages without matching takeoff should be omitted.
For example, a Concrete Takeoff PDF would contain only sheets where we actually performed concrete takeoff, with our concrete items shown and unrelated takeoffs hidden. Subs would receive a focused set showing what we want them to pick up, rather than hundreds of project pages.
3. Generate scope packages through MCP
Ideally, expose this workflow through the MCP server so I could ask ChatGPT to “Create separate takeoff PDFs for each of our trades.” It could use our existing Division/Trade properties or linked layers to identify the scopes, find the matching pages, and generate each PDF with the relevant takeoffs and legend, ready for us to upload to BuildingConnected.
The goal is to do the project takeoff once and turn it into useful scope-specific plan sets without manually toggling items and hunting down pages for every trade. Template-to-layer assignment would be a useful first improvement; automatic page selection and MCP PDF generation would complete the workflow.
This builds on the related “Default Layers for new projects” discussion, with a focus on creating and exporting subcontractor scope packages.
Hey Greg, thanks for the highly detailed feature request! All of these are great suggestions. 🙂
