Self Work Estimating

Under Review

This week our self work concrete assemblies moved into zzTakeoff. LinkedIn Post here. LINK Draw a spread footing and most of the estimate comes with it: labor hours, material, equipment, cost codes, production rates. Right on the takeoff line!

We're one step from finishing the whole self work estimate without leaving the takeoff. Here's what's missing:

1. Crews and wages. Build a crew, set wage rates per project, and let labor items price from the crew.

2. Markups. Project level markups by cost type, plus fee.

3. Grouping and sorting. Roll up by cost code, WBS, level or bid package. (Reports do this well now tho)

4. Reports. Labor hours, crew days and cost by code. Something an estimator can sign off on.

5. Snapshots. Freeze the estimate at each milestone (SD, DD, GMP, bid day) so we can always go back and see what we carried.

6. And the multiple estimates/takeoffs to ONE project.

Today we are still on Sage and some folks are starting to export to Excel to finish. It works. But quantities and pricing shouldn't live in two places.

Assemblies already came home. Let's bring the whole self work estimate with them. 🎺

Is this on the roadmap? Happy to screen share our setup and test anything you've got.

Your number 5 would be huge. Snapshots with variance reports between snapshots to tell the story of the project along the design/construction.

Hey Kyle, thanks for the feature requests and awesome LinkedIn Post!

Replying to each of your points:

1. I guess this depends on how many crews you can have, etc. One approach for this would be to build custom properties at the project level, then reference them in the item formulas. I'm curious what approach you had in mind, and how many crews you have.

2. You could create a markup per cost type at the project level, then pull it down to the items using formulas. You could also use the MCP to modify your templates to initially set this up.

3. As you mentioned, this can be done in reports if you set them up to group/slice. Is there a different approach that is missing?

4. Do you need to set up those reports, or is something missing from zzTakeoff?

5. We've had various users request this. I'll bump it with the dev team.

6. We are currently looking into adding either sub-projects or ways to have multiple takeoffs in 1 project, and this is on the roadmap.

Based on your responses please reject my suggestions. We need to have a team that really understands estimating so stay focused on Takeoff. You guys are rocking it.
