Sheet Tabs in zZ

Under Review

Would it be possible to add tabs inside zZ while keeping the option to open sheets in separate browser tabs, with both options saving each sheet’s zoom level?

The attached picture shows an example of how Stack does it. Stack automatically opens a new tab when you click on a plan sheet. This might be great for some users, but it’s not quite how I would want it because it makes flipping quickly through sheets less convenient.

I like how zZ currently lets you flip through sheets when you click on them. I would keep it that way, but add the ability to open a sheet in a 'zZ tab' when you want to keep it open. The ideal is to have both worlds: flip quickly through sheets as zZ works now, choose to keep a sheet open in a zZ tab, and still have the “Open in new tab” option for the browser.

This would be especially useful with large plan sets. You could keep the sheets you’re actively using open as tabs, making those your working plans. Instead of scrolling up and down the sheet list and reopening the same sheets, you could switch directly between them. Each tab would save its zoom level and position so you could return to where you left off without having to find your place and zoom in again. I believe zZ should preserve each sheet’s zoom level and position even with the way it currently works.

Tabs inside zZ would keep related sheets together without cluttering the browser tabs. Separate browser windows would still be useful for working across monitors. For example, I could have all my details on one monitor, floor plans and construction plans on another, and elevations on another. Every monitor would have multiple 'zZ tabs'.

You can essentially achieve this with browser tabs now, but it takes more setup. Not to mention that the address bar and bookmarks take up space and clutter your view. With tabs inside zZ, you could go full screen and still switch between them, instead of having to exit full screen, switch browser tabs, and go full screen again.

I would expect zZ tabs to load faster than opening a new browser tab, but even if the speed were the same, the difference would still be in maneuverability. It might not give us too much more screen space, but it would make it easier to move between sheets and keep them organized. It’s both a UI improvement and an organization improvement.

Hey Edinsa, thank you for the detailed feature request! As far as I know, we have no plans to add tabs to zzTakeoff (since browser tabs provide similar functionality), but I will mention this to the dev team to see if it's something we could reconsider adding (since there is a benefit to loading/switching pages faster, etc.)

Also curious about others' input on this.
