Takeoff / Item Templates and associated Product Properties Updates

Under Review

This is a somewhat new request, but I am also going to include portions of other previously-requested posts.

Keep in mind I'm only on my 2nd Trial day.

We are Electrical Contractors, but this is likely to be relevant to any trade.

In regards to Takeoff / Item Templates and associated Product updates:

  • This assumes that you are using Products in Lists when creating Templates.
  • Create all needed Products, then create Templates as needed utilizing those Products when adding Material and Labor Items to the Template.
  1. Current Functionality:
  2. When updating a Product's Properties, that updated information does not auto-update any Templates that may be utilizing that Product.
  3. Current Product Properties: SKU, Description, Cost Each, Markup %, and Units.
  4. To my knowledge to update a Product's information in a Template we must go through each and every Template's items and update them manually.
  5. This can be extremely time consuming if you have a decent number of Templates, which we plan to have hundreds of Templates to start.
  6. Doing this manually also greatly increases the chance of human error.
  7. Desired Functionality:
  8. When we update any Product's Properties, those changes should auto-update any instance of that Product in any Template.
  9. This will NOT update any existing Takeoffs in order to retain original Takeoff information, so it is important to update any products BEFORE doing Takeoffs.
  10. To update items that have already been Taken-off we can currently go to the Reports tab to update relevant Product information.
  11. But, it would also be nice to have an option to retroactively have Takeoff items be updated with current Product Properties.

Additional Requests (that may or may not already exist as requests):

  1. Add Sales Tax Rates properties to Products that can be edited globally.
  2. This would allow the "Cost" of an item to be the pre-tax cost so less manual math has to be completed.
  3. If you have a resellers permit and purchase items tax-free, you still need to include tax one way or another.
  4. Allow for export and import of csv files to batch update Product information or add new Products.
  5. Some vendors can provide a price sheet and it would be ideal if we could update or add any Products by simply uploading a new price sheet.
  6. The uploaded price sheet would likely need to be reorganized in whatever required format for zzTakeoff.
  7. One of our Vendors is Lutron and we can download a csv file of all of our costs and MSRP pricing, it has over 10,000 product items(as each color of something is a different SKU)
  8. Add a "Sell Price" property for Products that ignores any markup percentage and possible the new Tax property to show the Price Each as a specific price despite what our cost may be.
  9. Provide some sort of history or revisions for Templates and Products so we can know when something was last updated.
  10. This would be similar to how Google manages Version History with Sheets, Docs, etc.
  11. Even if this only has a couple revisions or at a bare minimum an un-editable auto-updating "Last Change" property so we can see what hasn't been updated recently it would be helpful.
  12. Allow for "swapping" of a current Takeoff item with a different Template Item without the need to delete previous Takeoffs and make new Takeoffs.
  13. Allow for "Zones" on a plan Page so that a Layer can simply be "Electrical", "Power", "Lighting", but that Takeoff counts can be grouped by Zone(Bedroom, Bathroom, Living, etc.)

Wow Colby, you have great ideas! I will forward these to the developers.

You could use Custom Properties to enable project level Sales Tax Rates. You could also add your Sell Price feature this way.
