zzTakeoff Pro – ChatGPT MCP Integration and Read/Write Access
Hi zzTakeoff Support,
I am currently using zzTakeoff Pro and would like to connect ChatGPT directly to my estimating database through the zzTakeoff MCP server.
The objective is to allow ChatGPT to access and make changes directly within zzTakeoff, rather than having to copy instructions into zzTakeoff AI for implementation.
The required functionality includes:
- Creating, renaming and reorganising estimating folders and activity groups.
- Adding, editing and deleting labour, material and equipment items.
- Creating and modifying estimating formulas and productivity rates.
- Updating existing Takeoff items and associated calculations.
- Reviewing and validating changes after implementation.
- Restricting modifications to Takeoff only, without changing Templates unless specifically authorised.
I have confirmed that my current ChatGPT Plus subscription does not support full custom MCP read/write access. OpenAI has advised that ChatGPT Business supports this functionality; however, I would be the only user, and the Business subscription may require a minimum of two paid seats.
Could you please advise:
- Does the zzTakeoff MCP server currently support all the read/write operations listed above?
- Can ChatGPT Plus or another single-user AI subscription connect to zzTakeoff Pro with full editing permissions?
- Has the MCP integration been successfully tested with ChatGPT Business, particularly for modifying Takeoff items and formulas?
- What would be the recommended method of establishing this connection for a single user?
I am simply seeking technical advice on the most suitable connection method before making any changes to my ChatGPT subscription.
I would appreciate clarification on the available options.

Yes, Steve, zzTakeoff Pro supports direct MCP reading and editing without copying requests into zzTakeoff AI. I would confirm the ChatGpt's subscription’s write-access eligibility before purchasing Business.
1. The supported operations include creating, renaming and reorganising folders and assemblies; adding, editing and deleting labour, material and equipment items; changing formulas and productivity inputs; and reading back updated items and calculated quantities. AI review does not replace checking the estimate yourself.
2. zzTakeoff does not require ChatGPT Business specifically. The assistant must support custom remote MCP connections, OAuth sign-in and write actions. I cannot confirm current ChatGPT Plus eligibility, Business seat requirements or another provider’s individual-plan entitlement. Claude web/desktop is another documented connection option, but confirm its plan’s access before subscribing.
3. I cannot confirm a successful ChatGPT Business test covering your complete Takeoff and formula-editing workflow. Connection support alone is not confirmation that this workflow has been tested.
4. For a single user, first check whether your existing account offers the required connection and write tools. Our assistant-specific setup guidance is available here:
Once your assistant supports those requirements:
• Add the MCP server using the URL above and OAuth authentication.
• Sign in to zzTakeoff.
• Select Full access, then click Allow Access.
• Open the intended project in zzTakeoff and select Use this tab when prompted. Keep that tab open.
• Test a small change in a test project, then check the formula and resulting quantity.
Your zzTakeoff role must allow Use MCP Tools and the requested editing actions, and workspace security must allow MCP.
For Template protection, editing project Takeoffs does not automatically change Templates. However, MCP offers Full access or Read-only, not a separate Takeoff-only permission. To enforce protection, use a custom role that allows the required Takeoffs actions but denies changes to Templates and Template Libraries. That restriction also applies to your own account; Template changes require an authorised permission change. An instruction to the AI alone is not an enforced restriction.
