'Name' properties

Is it possible to change the properties for the default 'Name' field?

For example what i am trying to achieve is that if I have a parent list saved within zz with all my takeoff item names and associated item code for each, could I pick from the list dropdown in the name field and then dependant on the name selected, the relevant item code would be pulled through from the parent list into a seperate field for the item code?

Currently I can work around this by creating custom properties and then manually load in every item name and item code separately which is a long winded exercise, but if there was an option for the above you could load a parent list in from your Excel database which drives the dropdown list.
