Collecting input: Terminology for Job / Project / Takeoff / Measurements / Markups / Annotations

In the construction industry / takeoff software there are a lot of overlapping terms that are loosely used. I know these are just terms, but a lot of documentation and UI is built around them.


What is your vote and why?


  1. Should we call it "New Project" or "New Job"?
  2. Should Area, Linear, Segment, and Count be considered "Takeoff Tools" or "Measurement Tools"?
  3. Should Cloud, Arrows, Notes on the plan pages be considered "Markup Tools" or "Annotation Tools"?
  4. Should a single page of a PDF be considered a "Page", a "Drawing" or a "Sheet"?
  5. Do you consider a "takeoff" as the measurements (square feet, linear distances, point counts), or the final quantities of materials / labor?


Our primary focus is on features, so this is not something we're stuck on or anything, but just throwing it out here for anyone who wants to chime in.

3. Markup might get confused with 'markup %' I would vote for annotations unless there is a shorter word. 'notate'? 'notes'.

I like annotations over markup, but the challenge then becomes: we need a word that includes area, linear, note, arrow, clouds, etc. any time of thing that can be drawn on the page. Currently we call it a draw item because we couldn't come up with a better word, but that's not a very good customer facing word...unless we want to teach them a new term "draw item" (which is an option - maybe not the top option, but a possibility).
