Applying Page Overlays

Overview

Page overlays in zzTakeoff allow you to place one plan or page on top of another. This is especially useful for comparing revisions, aligning details across multiple drawings, or referencing previous plans without switching between pages.

When to Use Page Overlays

  • To compare an updated plan with the original version.
  • To verify alignment of multiple plan sheets.
  • To trace or reference specific elements from another page.
  • To visually analyze changes between revisions.

Steps to Apply a Page Overlay

  1. Open Your Project
  2. Navigate to the project containing the pages you want to overlay.
  3. Select the Base Page
  4. Choose the page that will act as your “base” or background for the overlay.
  5. Access the Overlay Tool
  6. Click on the Overlay icon in the toolbar, or right-click on the page and select Apply Overlay.
  7. Choose the Overlay Page
  8. A dialog will appear listing all other pages in the project. Select the page you want to overlay.
  • Adjust Overlay SettingsOpacity: Slide to adjust transparency so both layers are visible.
  • Positioning: Drag the overlay to align it with the base page.
  • Rotation & Scale: Fine-tune rotation and scale if pages differ in size or orientation.
  1. Apply the Overlay
  2. Click Apply to finalize the overlay. You can continue adjusting it interactively if needed.
  3. Save Your Work
  4. Once aligned, save the project to preserve your overlay settings.

Tips & Best Practices

  • Use opacity control to make comparisons clearer.
  • Lock the overlay once aligned to prevent accidental movement.
  • Overlays are non-destructive; the original pages remain unchanged.
  • For complex projects, consider creating a dedicated Overlay Folder for organization.

Troubleshooting

  • Overlay appears misaligned: Check the page scale and orientation. Use the rotation or scaling tools to adjust.
  • Cannot select overlay page: Ensure the page is uploaded and not archived.
  • Performance slows with multiple overlays: Limit the number of overlays visible simultaneously, or close unnecessary pages.

This workflow helps you quickly visualize differences, trace elements, and verify plans without leaving the zzTakeoff environment.
