Using Layers

Layers are an essential feature in zzTakeoff that help you organize, manage, and control different elements of your takeoff project. By using layers effectively, you can separate types of objects, streamline your workflow, and maintain a clear view of your plans.

What Are Layers?

A layer is like a transparent sheet on which you can place objects, measurements, or annotations. Each layer can be independently shown, hidden, or locked, allowing you to focus on specific parts of your project without clutter.

Benefits of Using Layers

  • Organization – Separate sections of your plan (e.g., walls, windows, doors) onto different layers.
  • Control Visibility – Show only the elements you need at any given time.
  • Prevent Mistakes – Lock layers to avoid accidental edits.
  • Efficient Collaboration – Different team members can work on different layers without interfering with others’ work.

How to Use Layers in zzTakeoff

1. Accessing the Layers Panel

  1. Open your project in zzTakeoff.
  2. Locate the Layers panel from the toolbar or side menu.
  3. The panel lists all existing layers and their current visibility status.

2. Creating a New Layer

  1. Click Add Layer or New Layer.
  2. Enter a descriptive name (e.g., “Glazing” or “Curtain Walls”).
  3. Assign a color for easier identification on your plan.
  4. Click Save or OK to add the layer.

3. Organizing Objects on Layers

  • Select the object(s) on your plan.
  • In the object properties or context menu, choose the desired layer.
  • The object will now be grouped under that layer.

4. Managing Layer Visibility

  • Toggle the eye icon next to each layer to show or hide its contents.
  • Hidden layers remain in the project but are not displayed on the plan.

5. Locking Layers

  • Click the lock icon next to a layer to prevent edits.
  • Locked layers cannot be moved, deleted, or modified until unlocked.

6. Renaming or Deleting Layers

  • Right-click a layer and select Rename to update its name.
  • To remove a layer, right-click and select Delete. (Note: Deleting a layer will also remove all objects assigned to it.)
