Using the Area Takeoff Tool

The Area Takeoff Tool in zzTakeoff allows you to measure and calculate the total area of spaces on construction plans. This tool is commonly used for flooring, insulation, roofing, concrete, drywall, and other surface-based material calculations.

By tracing the perimeter of a space, zzTakeoff automatically calculates the area and stores it in your takeoff data for accurate estimating and reporting.

When to Use the Area Takeoff Tool

Use the Area Takeoff Tool when you need to:

  • Measure floor areas
  • Calculate insulation coverage
  • Determine roofing or ceiling areas
  • Measure slab or concrete surfaces
  • Estimate drywall or paint coverage
  • Capture any enclosed surface area on a plan

How to Use the Area Takeoff Tool

Step 1: Select the Area Takeoff Tool

  1. Open your project and navigate to the desired plan page.
  2. Go to the Takeoff Tools panel.
  3. Select Area Takeoff Tool.

Step 2: Start Tracing the Area

  1. Click on the starting point of the area.
  2. Click along the perimeter to trace the shape.
  3. Continue clicking around the boundary.
  4. Click the starting point again or press Enter to close the shape.

zzTakeoff will automatically calculate the total area.

Step 3: Save the Area Takeoff

  1. Assign the takeoff to a category or material.
  2. Add a name or label if needed.
  3. Confirm the takeoff.

The area is now stored and included in project totals.

Editing an Area Takeoff

To modify an existing area:

  1. Select the area on the plan.
  2. Drag points to adjust the shape.
  3. Add or remove points as needed.
  4. Save changes.

The area will automatically update.

Best Practices

  • Ensure the plan scale is set correctly before taking area measurements.
  • Zoom in for precise corner placement.
  • Trace along wall edges or boundaries for accurate results.
  • Use consistent categories for easier reporting.
  • Double-check irregular shapes before saving.

Common Use Cases

Flooring Contractors

Measure rooms to calculate flooring material.

Insulation Contractors

Determine coverage for wall or ceiling insulation.

Roofing Contractors

Calculate roof sections for material estimates.

Concrete Contractors

Measure slab and foundation areas.

Tips for Accuracy

  • Always verify plan scale before starting
  • Close the shape completely to calculate area
  • Avoid overlapping points
  • Use snapping tools for clean boundaries
  • Review totals in the takeoff summary
