I'm working on a project that has a bunch of test holes and alot of the material you are looking for is the same material. What I was thinking, it would be nice if we could create project specific custom counts or linear. My plan was to make a quick [th #] - [Material Type] name tag and then input the info below.
I know this can be done with Custom Properties, but it would be nice to make quick properties. Maybe even add them to custom properties as pending incomplete properties.

I have been thinking about the same kind of concept. Variable "buckets" that can be referenced and summed outside of the hierarchy.
Use the hierarchy to determine a a qty. But then the ability to place that qty into a bucket, a holder variable. Then I can have another item anywhere else in the hierarchy that calls the value of that variable.
If i have 7 instances of an item who's quantity is 2 each, maybe "bolt patterns", then the total placed in the variable "bolt patterns" will be 14. Then from another item I could call [bolt patterns] and it would feed in the value 14 to do whatever I wanted to it.
@Shawn, Is this the same kind of thing you are thinking about here?
Perhaps you can just give an "alt name" to the "formula (qty)" value from any item, and then anything given that alt name has the value added to it
This is what i'm talking about. I created a Custom property to do it but, to make them on the fly would be nice. I shouldn't have posted the one with the QTY lol.
