Dark Mode

Planned

Would love a dark mode option

Hi Tim! We'll discuss more internally. We tried making dark mode work once, but the issue was that the white background of plans made it not very effective. We have experimented with inverting the colors on the plans as well, so they have black background and white lines. What do you guys think of inverting the plans (or at least an option to invert them) when in dark mode?

pretty sure that's how bluebeam does thier dark mode. The background of the drawings goes black and lines/text go white. It works for the most part. Something about it throws me off though. I'm normally big on dark mode and after a week of using dark mode on bluebeam, I went back to normal. I can't put my finger on what made it feel weird to me. Maybe I just needed to give it more time

Gent, PS doesn't have "dark mode" but they do allow the ability to change the backround from Black, Blue or Silver. I like dark mode too but I have found the "Black" backround to help with eye fatigue.

I second this! I'd love a dark/night mode option. I'm coming from Kreo, which has a night mode that looks great (it just feels buggy and slow in comparison to zzTakeoff, and it's double the price).

Hi Justin. We've experimented with some dark mode stuff, and even with some plan invert stuff, which looks pretty good. The biggest holdup I can think of currently is the colors for takeoffs or annotations. Since some users may be on dark mode and others may be on light mode within the same company. The colors of takeoffs may not seem correct or may have the wrong contrast for some users. For example: a note annotation with black text (and transparent background on the note) may look fine on a white set of plans, but if the plans were inverted for dark mode, then the black text may not be visible. We could maybe try some automatic color flipping there, too, but hard to say where to draw the line on what we flip colors for and which we leave. We'll keep trying to make it work.

I agree too.

It would be great if the UI could be black. It doesn't matter if the pages have a white background, but it would be nice if everything around them could be black.

I use Word in dark mode and the pages are white. Only the UI is black.

Hi Heber. I appreciate the response! I don't know for sure what Kreo does, but it doesn't seem to be just inverting colors--the page background is a little lighter than plain black, and the drawing lines aren't bright white. The result is pretty easy on the eyes, both aesthetically and in terms of eye strain. But zzTakeoff is significantly faster at loading pages, and maybe Kreo is doing something under the hood to achieve this look that's making it slower. If that's the case, I don't think it's a worthwhile trade.
